Man Who Jumped Through Flaming Hoops Inducted Into Park District Hall of Fame
He caught the attention of the world, jumping more than 30 feet over a row of barrels – on ice – and jumping through flaming hoops, also on ice. Northbrook resident Richard Widmark has won world championships in barrel jumping, speedskating and cycling. In recognition of his accomplishments as an athlete, the Northbrook Board of Park Commissioners voted to induct Widmark into the Northbrook Park District Sports Hall of Fame.
An induction ceremony for Widmark is planned for February 22 during the Park Board’s 7pm meeting at the Leisure Center. A plaque with his photo and highlights will be added to the Hall of Fame display case at the Northbrook Sports Center.
This is Widmark’s second official recognition from the Board of Park Commissioners. In 1993, he was inducted into the Park District's Hall of Fame and recognized for more than 30 years of service and leadership, helping others achieve in sports as a coach, volunteer and active member of cycling committees and boards.
