Does A Dollar Store Belong in Downtown Northbrook?

Work is progressing on a Dollar Tree store in downtown Northbrook, which will fill the space in Meadow Plaza that was vacated by Blockbuster Video roughly two years ago.
At the most recent village board meeting, trustees approved a 26-foot long wall sign to be displayed on the east side of the building where Dollar Tree will be located.
During meetings held to discuss a downtown plan for Northbrook earlier this year, however, some residents expressed concern over a dollar store, saying it wasn't the right fit for downtown Northbrook.
In February, property owner Jay Heitman told Patch he believes that Dollar Tree is a positive development, given the economy.
"It was a black hole before,” Heitman said. “Is it a black hole now?”
Readers of Patch seem to be of mixed opinion.
"This is not the type of store downtown Northbrook needs," Deirdre commented on our first article about the Dollar Tree. "How about Party City or Babies R Us or Trader Joe's?"
But Alfred Mulle disagreed.
"I'm THRILLED that a Dollar Tree is coming to Northbrook!" he wrote. "I have been going out of my way to the Morton Grove location."
