Dold, Schneider Spar on Medicare
Schneider campaign claims Dold wants to end Medicare guaranty while Congressman’s camp says that is not the case.
(Updated on Oct. 26 at 5 a.m.) Editor’s Note—One issue distinguishing Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) and his Democratic opponent, Brad Schneider of Deerfield, is the change the House Republican Budget proposes to make to Medicare.
In July, Patch published the story below describing on the differences between Schneider and Dold.
Since the story was written, the author of the plan contained in the House Republican budget, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), has become the Republican Vice Presidential nominee.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), who developed the current proposal with Ryan earlier this year, parts company with the Wisconsin Congressman because the provisions in the House Republican Budget also call for a repeal of the Affordable Care Act, according to an Oct. 12 article in The Hill. Wyden voted against it in the Senate.
(Earlier on July 15 at 5 a.m.) When the campaign of Democratic Congressional candidate Brad Schneider of Deerfield attacked Republican opponent Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) Thursday over Medicare, Dold’s campaign answered with some truth serum of its own Saturday.
The Schneider campaign set up a “Dold Medicare Vouchers” booth in Highland Park’s Port Clinton Square Thursday to inform voters the North Shore Congressman wants to replace the current Medicare program with a voucher system senior citizens can use to offset the cost of private health insurance.
Earlier: Dold Outraises Schneider by $135,396
“The Republican plan is to take away the Medicare guarantee and turn it into a voucher system,” Schneider campaign manager Reed Adamson said. “People are looking for a secure retirement. They plan to take away the guarantee and turn it into a voucher program.”
Though Dold has voted twice for a House Republican Budget that contains proposed changes to Medicare for people under 55, his campaign spokesperson John McGovern disputes the idea takes away the Medicare guaranty.
Dold supports changes to Medicare proposed by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI). The fundamentals of that plan are contained in the House Republican Budget authored by Ryan and passed by the lower chamber in April with Dold’s vote, according to McGovern.
“Congressman Dold does not support any changes in Medicare for those above 55 years old or a voucher system,” McGovern said. “Congressman Dold supports the Wyden-Ryan reforms which allow individuals under 55 the option of Medicare as it exists today.”
McGovern explained the Wyden-Ryan plan gives people under 55 options for medical coverage when they reach retirement age.
“Consider what Sen. Wyden has said about his own plan,” McGovern said citing a March 19 Huffington Post story. “‘Wyden-Ryan doesn't eliminate the traditional Medicare plan; instead it guarantees that seniors who want to enroll in Medicare's traditional fee for service plan will always have that option.’”
McGovern also explained the Wyden-Ryan plan is not a voucher system for those who choose not to use traditional Medicare. It contains a provision allowing seniors to "receive a government subsidy that would help pay for private insurance," according to a March 19 article in The Hill.
“‘Unlike a voucher program that would give seniors a fixed amount of money to purchase health plans, Wyden-Ryan would adjust premium support payments each year to reflect the actual cost of health insurance premiums’” McGovern said quoting Wyden.

Mr. Schneider has committed to continue Medicare as a commitment to the American people. He knows that the people who pay into it should get the program that they have pay and work for. A voucher is a coupon. They both have a set amount of money for an item. No company is required to take them either.
I for one am not interested in the government "playing" games with my money. I am 51, I don't need uncertaintity as to how I will pay my medical bills when I retire. My husband is 71. He worked since he was 4 on a family farm. He continued to work until last year. He has medicare as he paid for. It has kept him well even thought he has a serious heart problem and diabetes. The well-care services are awesome.
Mr. Dold. I don't want your coupon.
Thank you, Mr Schneider for having the courage to let people know the truth about Dold's vouchers.

Blah blah blah. Both of these candidates are the same. Then everyone spends all day on here fighting about it and nothing changes, because you all keep nominating them.

Playing games with your money? What money? It's all been spent. The only assets in the "Medicare Trust Fund" are US Treasuries, which are a promise to tax our children to pay for benefits we voted for ourselves. Social Security is the same. We voted to enslave our children so that we wouldn't have to worry about our retirement. Pretty selfish.
We all got scammed, and we need to fix it. Government can NOT be trusted to save money for the future. That should be obvious to everyone by now.
Dold is at least trying to reform this hideous program. Schneider will just go on buying votes with our children's future.

The actuaries working for the government have plainly stated that this program will be broke by 2016, and dwarfing the program by an institution like Obamacare makes your courage look like foolishness.

Obamacare actually adds 12 years to the viability of Medicare. That's not enough, more should be done. I don't want an inflation vulnerable program like Romney/Ryan/Dold want to thrust upon us. Healthcare costs are out of control and a voucher that covers costs today, is likely to not cover costs in a few years. The Republicans don't worry about regular people having enough healthcare, I do and Medicare needs to be made viable through adequate funding, efficiency and fraud control not by gutting the program and sticking us with the inflation in healthcare.

Because RB has already seen Obamacare in action, and knows for fact it will do everything he/she claims. Riiiiiight. Inflation vulnerable? Give me a break. Stop and look around you. Obama promised the stimulus plan would have us at 5.5 percent unemployment by mid 2012. There are graphs showing this that still exist. And I'm going to believe he knows about the economy? Hilarious!!

Rep. Dold voted, twice, for a plan that ends Medicare as it exists today for those under 55. Don't pay attention to what he says - look at his votes: he voted twice for the Ryan budget; if the Senate and Executive branches had been Republican, it would be law. Period. If you look at the specifics of the plan, you will see there is nothing moderate about it. He can say he supports many more moderate plans all day long, but I would only believe those words if they were backed by principled votes against the Ryan plan. The proposed Wyden-Ryan was not passed by the house - the Ryan Plan was. Mr. Dold, you will be held to account for your deeds, not your words.

Obamacare removed 500 billion from the medicare budget so they could count it again in the fraudulant OMB score. As the virus matures, it will blow a hole in medicare and the United States treasury. I don't know about Republicans, but people like me care about the country and its future. We care about the children too.

He removed $500 billion through a very reasonable plan to eliminate fraud. It is rampant within Medicare, and that you can't blame on Mr. Obama. Mildly interesting thread, I'm waiting for the Stericycle stuff to start, Romney will be running in circles.

I like the gerrymandered 10th. Go Brad! We are Lean Dem +6. If the 2010 election used the new map, Seals would of won with 52.7% of the vote. Our district will flip. An organization of my Sister's have signed up over 8500 new hispanic voters and they studied every precinct in the 10th. The 10th will flip easily You know Dold is worried when he is visiting state offices serving single mother's in Lake Villa and talking to hispanics in Park City. Dold's war on Women and his anti hispanic immigration views bought him bupkus!

Dold doesn't pay his emploees at Rose Pest overtime! In 2012...he doesn't pay overtime. He pays straight 8 hours per day plus 10% commission but you work...9...10...11 hours, plus 2 saturdays a month. Dold is a lawmaker (congressman) and a lawbreaker (labor laws) and is being sued right now. Ask him about overtime and why did he decided in 2010 to stop paying his techs overtime out of the blue! Oh...he won the election then...he didn't care about voters finding out...

Both these candidates suck. Both have more money than the average person, both are out of touch with society's middle class problems and both push their agendas on people instead of doing what voters ask. That's not democracy.
But hey, you fools keep nominating these people, then spend all day on here complaining about them from both sides. See a pattern?

Heard all this before there will be no "Death Panels".. I believe it was the Republicans who prefer those who don't have money or healthcare to just get on with dying. Where are your facts Ellie!!! Repeating it, does not make it true. It has worked for Repuiblicans messaging, but people are on to this tactic.

From July when this article first appeared to today, Schneider still has not explained how he will preserve and save Medicare, which is rapidly going broke. Typical Democrat. Keep on spending until the money runs out then shoot for a band aid solution. He won't even tell us what band aid he will apply!
Similarly, Schneider has had several months now to disclose his income tax returns and his "business" which has generated no revenues since January of 2010. He has filed documents indicating his net worth is between $5 to $25 million. Maybe this explains his lack of interest in fixing Medicare. He has no personal worries about money and retirement, unlike the rest of us.
His lack of transparency and vagueness has been a hallmark of his campaign.
The Democrats did pressure Rep. Wyden, a Democrat, into walking away from the Ryan plan. So I guess that means that they did do something. They voted to let Medicare run out of cash and leave seniors high and dry.
Doing nothing kills Medicare. Repeating this old article in an attempt to help the struggling Schneider campaign refocus their unfocused message just shows how callous Schneider is on this subject.

...and the Republican Plan? Vouchers! Do you really want an 85 year old having to find an insurance company and rate that fits within the fixed amount of the voucher? There is also inflation. Healthcare has an extraordinary inflation rate and those vouchers may not be enough. Sure, fix Medicare, don't decimate it like the Romney/Ryan/Dold plan.

You mean that 85 year old can choose between many medicare suppliment and medi-gap programs, all sold by independent insurance companies or the AARP, but is too stupid/feeble/ignorant to make a choice among regular insurance plans. You certainly have a very low opinion of other people's ability to make decisions concerning themselves.

Much less complicated than the voucher program, and affordable... And for anyone still thinking 'moderate Mitt' is going stick around if he were to be elected, there's this timely opinion from Bloomberg Opinion. Hint...Mitt would be far from Moderate. Medicare will be demolished in a Ryan-Romney-Dold budget.
