Elyssa's Mission, the Northbrook-based non-for-profit that offers suicide preventions support and resources for at-risk teens, raised more than $60,000 during their Race to Save Young Lives benefit at Arlington Racetrack in August.

Elyssa’s Mission was founded in 2006 by Joanne and Alan Meyers, who lost their daughter to suicide. Today Elyssa’s Mission offer hands-on support to middle and high schools to help educate students, staff and parents on how to recognize at risk teens.

"Like cancer, mental illness is a disease. Like cancer, mental illness is treatable," the Meyers' said in a statement. "Ignoring mental illness will not make it go away. We have to talk about it.”

Elyssa’s Mission is proactive in funding and distributing the SOS Signs of Suicide program, along with other proven prevention programs backed by mental health professionals.

Currently, more 40 local junior high and high schools actively participate in Elyssa’s Mission’s prevention programs.
