Get Out: Guaranteed Weekend Fun

On tap this weekend are a couple of races for a good cause, another rummage sale and free kite flying for kids.

 

Grace Church Rummage Sale
Where/When: Thu. May 19 12 p.m -7 p.m., Fri. May 20 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sat. May 21 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Grace Church, 4000 Capitol Drive, Wheeling
Why Go: Maybe you’ll find that old concert t-shirt you’ve been looking for all these years or the dancing hula girl lamp that got broken in college.
Pricing: Free

Al FrescoLife Through Opera-Colored Glasses performance
When/Where: Friday, May 20, and Saturday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 22 at 4 p.m.; 306 S. Prospect, Park Ridge
Why Go: Petite Opera’s original comic operetta follows the adventures of Al Fresco, a first generation Italian-American raised by an opera-loving family. The English lyrics are set to famous music, providing an introduction to opera.
Pricing: $15-$25; free for kids under age 6.

Lew Blond Memorial 5k Run/Walk
When/Where: 8 a.m. Saturday, May 21; Maple School, 2370 Shermer Rd., Northbrook
Why Go: Enjoy a Saturday morning outside with the family and raise money for a good cause. The event includes participation opportunities for all ages and abilities, including a 5k race, 5k walk and 1 mile run, and raises money for the Les Turner ALS Foundation, scholarships for Glenbrook North and South high school students and District 30 projects.
Pricing: $30 adults, $18 youth 14 and under

Kite Festival
When/Where: 12-4 p.m. Saturday, May 21; Wood Oaks Green, 1150 Sanders Rd, Northbrook
Why Go: Assuming the weather’s good, what’s more fun than watching a kite fly in a blue sky? The first 500 kids will receive a free kite to assemble, decorate and fly. You can also bring a kite or buy one at the park from Chicago Kite. The event includes professional kite flying, prizes and a kite candy drop at 3 p.m.

Pacifica Quartet
When/Where: 7:30-9 p.m., Saturday, May 21; Music Institute of Chicago, 1490 Chicago Ave, Evanston
Why Go: The Grammy winning Pacifica Quartet is known as one of the very best string quartets in the world. Hear violinist Simin Ganatra, violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson, violist Masumi Per Rostad and cellist Brandon Vamos play an all-Beethoven ensemble, including String Quartet No. 7 in F Major, Op. 59, No. 1, and Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132.
Pricing: $25 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students

7th Annual Stepping Up to Wellness Run/Walk
When/Where: 7-11 a.m. Sunday, May 22; Independence Grove, 16400 W. Buckley Rd., Libertyville
Why Go: Spend a morning in beautiful Independence Grove and honor loved ones touched by cancer while raising money for Northbrook’s Cancer Wellness Center. Choose from a 10k run, 5k run/walk and one-mile family walk.
Pricing: $30 in advance for 10k or 5k and $35 day of, $10 in advance for one-mile walk or $15 day of
