Northbrook Ranked In America's 100 Safest Towns
The only North Shore community on the list is the 93rd safest town in America according to the real estate research firm, NeighborhoodScout.
Northbrook is among the safest communities in the country, according to a recently released study.
The village was declared the 93rd safest town in the U.S. by NeighborhoodScout. The real estate research firm came up with the nation’s 100 safest towns based on the number of property crimes and violent crimes per 1,000 residents. The study, which includes towns with populations of at least 25,000, is based on data from 2011.
“We are very pleased that Northbrook has been recognized as among the top 100 safest towns in the nation," Northbrook village president Sandy Frum wrote in an email. "Clearly, this serves to reinforce what we already know about our community – that Northbrook is a very safe, excellent place to raise a family and to call ‘home’.”
The research data is based on the number of crimes reported to the FBI, according to NeighborhoodScout’s website. Those crimes include burglary, larceny-theft, vehicle theft, homicide, forcible rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault, the site says
The study declared that Northbrook is safer than 65 percent of the nation’s cities, and states that the chance of becoming the victim of a violent crime in the village is one in 2,776 — based on four reports of rape, four robberies, four assaults and no murders during the study’s time frame.
Meanwhile, there’s a one in 71 chance of becoming the victim of a property crime in the village, according to the study.
The report also spotlights the village's eight safest neighborhoods. They are:
- Landwehr Rd / Techny Rd
- Dundee Rd / Sanders Rd
- North Northfield
- Pfingsten Rd / Walter Ave
- Village Center
- County Line Rd / Waukegan Rd
- Pfingsten Rd / Techny Rd
Northbrook is among 12 Illinois towns to make the top 100 safest communities in 2011. Others included Bartlett (4th), Buffalo Grove (35th), Plainfield (51st), Mundelein (52nd), Hanover Park (57th), Mount Prospect (58th), Palatine (68th), Park Ridge (72nd), West Chicago (74th), Carol Stream (75th) and Hoffman Estates (97th).

Northbrook is very safe unless Ofc Guzman is the responding officer. Tell the tens of people who were robbed by this man that our town is one of the safest in the country. Also, its safe if you are not the significant other of the deputy fire chief. Not to mention the numerous heroin busts over the past year. Interesting how the Mayor will give a response to this report but no response to the awful events of the past couple of weeks. I love the transparency of our village. What the heck is going on in our town!

Bare in mind the data in this report was produced relative to other towns in the state and country. Sure, crimes happen in Northbrook, it's why we have a police department, but what town is immune of crime?
Also, Sandy Frum told me the State's Attorney requested village officials refrain from commenting on the Guzman case at this point in the investigation. Once that request has been lifted, I'll be sure to publish an update with their take on the matter.
