Unattended Candle Causes Home Fire
At about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, fire departments responded to the 3000 block of Greenacre Dr. for a reported house fire. Upon arrival, crews were met by two occupants outside who stated the fire was on the first floor of the home.
Police on scene utilized a fire extinguisher and fire crews extinguished the remainder of the fire. The initial investigation determined the cause of the fire to be an unattended candle left burning. The house was equipped with smoke detectors but they were disconnected at the time of the fire. Official cause of the fire and initial damage estimates are still being assessed.
Fire Department Responds to Car Accident with Extraction
Around 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, a woman lost control of her car in the 3800 block of Mission Hills Rd. Upon arrival, crews found the 82-year-old woman hanging upside down by her seat belt in the inverted car.
Fire crews carefully used rescue equipment to extricate her from the car and wreckage. Paramedics transported the Mission Hills resident to a Level I trauma center due to her injuries.
Northbrook Police Assist in Gurnee
Northbrook’s Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) representative was called out early Friday morning to assist with an armed, barricaded subject in Gurnee. Three schools in Gurnee near the residential area of Raven Court were closed or locked down.
There were reports of possible shots fired inside the house. The NIPAS team responded to the area and at approximately 10:30 a.m. Friday, the subject surrendered to the NIPAS team.
Northbrook Police Chief Trains Police in Kosovo
Chief Wernick returned from Pristina, Kosovo this week after conducting training for 42 police officers from six countries in the Management of Criminal Investigations Units. The police officers were all command staff level personnel representing Kosovo, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The class was historic in nature, as this was the first time in history since the war and the break-up of the former Yugoslavia that all six countries came together for the purpose of training police officers. The class was sponsored by the United States Department of Justice through the International Criminal Justice Training Assistance Program (ICITAP).
The class was conducted with the use of two translators and presented in two languages, Serbian and Croatian. The program was sponsored by the U.S Department of Justice.
