An wise and experienced industrial psychologist taught me that people are most prone to change when faced with a crisis or "near death" experience. I have found that to be true.
It points to a flaw in the 2008 "Hope and Change" slogan. It is obvious, now, we didn't change that much: given "hope" there is no reason to change. However, if the option had been "Change, or there is No Hope" the acual results might have been very different.
