Community Activities of Northbrook Holds Successful Bike Donation Drive at YMCA

Community Activities of Northbrook (“CAN”), a youth leadership organization based at the North Suburban YMCA, enjoyed sunny skies and an enthusiastic response to its first social service project, a bicycle donation drive. The group collected 21 used bicycles that will be donated to Working Bikes Cooperative, a Chicago non-profit that distributes bikes to people in need around the world. The bike drive took place on October 13 at the NSYMCA, located at 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook.

CAN formerly was a youth division of Northbrook Citizens for Drug and Alcohol Awareness, which merged with the NSYMCA in July 2013. As a Y student leadership group, CAN works to bring together teens with a diverse range of interests for social events and community service projects. The bike drive was CAN’s first event since becoming part of the NSYMCA. Future events are in the planning stages, including a possible paintball tournament in the spring.

“We are very proud to support CAN’s efforts,” noted Sari Glazebrook, NSYMCA Membership Director. “This group has the potential to engage youth from all around our community in positive activities. The bike drive is a great start, and we look forward to working with them on all their future projects.”
