Honor Your Family's Roots with Flowers this Easter

Chances are that if you have walked into a Sunset Foods or a Jewel in the last few days, you are greeted with huge pots of Easter Lilies. A symbol of purity in America, the white flower stem emerging from a bulb represents the resurrection and it is one of the most common flowers given on Easter. However, if you’re one of those folks who are hooked on websites that analyze your family tree, you might consider paying homage to your heritage by giving flowers that are used at Easter celebration in your homeland. Here are a few floral customs observed internationally as indicated by the international floral experts at Flora2000:

England and Russia along with some other Eastern European countries celebrate Easter with Pussy Willows. They are also used instead of Palms on Palm Sunday in many of these countries.

In the Middle East, Easter celebrations include wild tulips.

In Mexico, churches are filled with tropical flowers during the Easter season.

Germans decorate with red fruited plants such as English holly and other red flowers such as carnations to represent the blood of Christ.

Other popular flowers for Easter include daffodils and narcissi for their fresh yellow and cream colors and classic shapes.

“One tip we share with customers during Easter relates directly to lilies. If you remove the yellow pollen-bearing pods or anthers in the center of the flower, the lilies’ life will be prolonged and you will be able to enjoy it longer,” shares Mahima Narula Business Head of Flora2000, an online international floral and gift delivery company.  “Caring for the plant is also simple. Keep the soil moist but not water-logged. Then keep the Lily in a light airy and cool position (not more than 70F or 21C),” she adds.

Whether you are honoring American Easter traditions or traditions of Europe or Mexico, Easter flower arrangements that capture the spring spirit are just a click away. From hydrangeas and lilies to carnations and alstroemerias, you’re sure to find a bouquet perfect for your holiday party.
