Northbrook Photographer Allen Cohen Exhibits at North Suburban YMCA

This month the North Suburban YMCA's Community Gallery showcases the work of Northbrook-based photographer Allen Cohen.  An artist reception open to the public will be held on Friday, January 10 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Y, located at 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook.
Cohen has taken photographs for most of his life, but when digital photography came on the scene, it became his passion. He won first place in Northbrook Library’s national juried art show and now his work is exhibited as part of their permanent art collection. He has also had many works shown at the Highland Park Art Center and Northbrook Village Hall, and has given talks and visual presentations at the North Shore Senior Center, Skokie Camera Club, and Northwestern University. His works have been published in “East on Central” literary magazine as well as “The Journal,” which is part of Northwestern’s life-long education program. In addition, he has been featured on Channel 17 NCTV “Spotlight on Northbrook Arts.” A YMCA member for many years, Cohen participates in a variety of activities and enjoys discussing life and work with the Y’s informal “Breakfast Club”.
“I capture the unusual and the quiet times of people and scenes in our neighborhoods, as well as my travels around the world,” said Cohen. “I often turn reality into meaningful photo montages. To me, photography is not just recording what one sees, but how that translates into feelings and emotions of the moment. There is always a story to be told in the faces of the people that I meet and the places where they work and play.”
The YMCA’s Community Gallery features monthly public exhibits that showcase the talent of local artists. Most art displayed at the YMCA is for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the North Suburban YMCA's Visual Arts Department. The next exhibit in the gallery will include paintings from the Northbrook Senior Center Drop-in Painting Group.
