Oakton Community College Emeritus Classes for Those 55-Plus

Oakton Community College and Covenant Village of Northbrook are collaborating to offer a series of Emeritus Program classes. Class will be every Tuesday in October, from 1 to 2:15 p.m., at Covenant Village, 2625 Techny Rd., Northbrook. Developed by Oakton, the classes are for those 55 and better — “the student that wasn’t born yesterday.” 

October 1
Indigenous Movements of the Andes: Retrospective and ProspectiveIn 2005, Bolivia elected its first indigenous president following the Aymara and Quechua peoples’ 30-year struggle for recognition, equality and social justice. Peter Hudis, Ph.D., Oakton professor of humanities and philosophy, will explore the recent success of the area’s groups in restructuring political relations and social values.

October 8
Republican Response to the 2012 ElectionThe 2012 U.S. election exposed the Republican Party’s weaknesses with respect to Hispanic, young and female voters. In our two-party system, both parties have learned they must adapt or lose electoral strength. Julie Strauss, Ph.D., Northwestern University, will discuss how the GOP is evolving and who is leading the charge.

October 15
In South Africa Now  South African native Lindy Rubin, M.A., University of Chicago, will discuss how apartheid affects South Africa today. Rubin will cover the country’s new leadership, changes over the last two decades and the potential for the future.

October 22
Germany: Post-Election Review  After a drawn-out and turbulent campaign, Germans went to the polls in September and elected a new federal government. German historian Anette Isaacs, M.A., will present an informative post-election review of the German economic engine, German domestic and European Union policies, and potential changes to the legendary German social safety net.
