Farmer's Market Getting Ready to Sprout

Art of Recycling Day deadline for submissions is June 1; market opens June 20.

While volunteers are getting ready for the upcoming season, the Northbrook Farmer's Market is looking for artists who want to do nothing but talk trash.

Applications are being accepted until June 1 for Art of Recycling Day, a one-day focus on creating art from materials that usually wind up in a landfill.

Items created from all this trash must be something usable, wearable and/or aesthetically pleasing objects. Each must include a brief written description of its origin and how it was repurposed or refashioned into its final form and be signed by the artist, so that shoppers will know what they are purchasing and how their purchase promotes environmental stewardship.

This event is sponsored by Veolia Environmental Services.

The fourth year of local food sales and other stuff will be Wednesday June 20 at Our Lady of the Brook parish, 3700 Dundee Rd.

Opening day will begin with the traditional 9:30 a.m. watermelon cutting ceremony presided over by Northbrook Village President Sandy Frum and Ron . Also on the card that day will be a performance by the Northbrook Community Choir, free popcorn, Master Gardener seed-planting and craft projects for kids, and of course, farm fresh produce and artisan items for sale.

The market will be open Wednesday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Oct. 10 in the church parking lot.

For those who want to show their wares, booth space is filling quickly. The table is available to one artist/crafter per week on a first-come basis for a nominal fee. Participants may download the form. A reservations list is also posted on the website.
