Homeowner Associations Rally Against Walmart

Several homeowner associations took an initiative to protest the proposed Walmart development at 1000 Skokie Blvd. Some of these groups have joined together to hire a legal representative.

These associations echo many of the complaints other Walmart opponents have expressed against the superstore. But there was one notable criticism from Monday's public input meeting that came from a man who didn't speak about the effect Walmart would have on his property. Instead, the man said he has autism.

"People with disabilities are thrust into low wage jobs when Walmart undercuts local businesses that already hire the disabled," the speaker said. "When you have a disability, working at Walmart is not a stepping stone."

"For some people it's a last resort," he added.
