Local Troop Celebrates 100 Eagle Scouts in 45 Years

Carl Dibert became Northbrook Troop 64's 100th Eagle Scout.

When Carl Dibert became an Eagle Scout, it was an accomplishment not just for him but also for Northbrook’s Boy Scout Troop 64.

He is the group’s 100th Eagle Scout, the highest level of scouting and a rank less than five percent of Boy Scouts reach.

It was a proud day in particular for Terry Dibert, Carl’s father and the troop’s current Scoutmaster.

“I felt such pride today for all the scouts advancing in rank, and particularly for my son Carl reaching Eagle,” Terry Dibert said in a press release.

Dibert becoming the troop’s 100th Eagle Scout also coincided with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America.

“Since it is so difficult to reach the rank of Eagle we weren’t sure exactly when we would have our 100th Eagle,” troop Committee Chairman Craig Brown said in the release. “It is a fun coincidence to celebrate that achievement during the 100th anniversary of scouting.”

Longtime Northbrook resident Herb Engelhard formed Troop 64 in 1966.

“When we moved to Northbrook from Wilmette there wasn’t a troop at the church we attended so several of us came together to get it started,” Engelhard said in the release.

Although asthma prevented Engelhard from meeting the physical requirements to become an Eagle Scout himself, his son, Herb Engelhard III became the group’s first Eagle Scout in 1968.

In addition to scouting activities, some of Troop 64’s community service projects include collecting food for the Northfield Township Food Pantry, raising money for Northbrook Days and selling popcorn to benefit men and women in service overseas.
