Patch Picks: Best Way To Entertain The Kids On A Summer Day

Stave off boredom with these ideas for summer activities

Running out of ideas for another beautiful summer day? Have no fear – there are lots of safe and fun activities to keep local families busy any day of the week.

Game on

When you get tired of beating Mom at Candyland, take your competitive spirit to the . Board games galore hit the tables at the Northbrook Public Library two afternoons a week through July 20 at Game Day drop-ins. You might even discover a new favorite.

Go Fish

Families can get hooked on fishing at two locations in the Northbrook Park District. Residents can borrow rods and reels at no cost (thanks to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Access to Fishing Program) to use at or Lake Shermerville in . The equipment can be borrowed from the Techny Prairie Center Monday through Saturday, weather permitting. Borrowers need to leave an ID and bait is available for purchase - with $4 getting you 20 nightcrawlers. State of Illinois fishing laws apply at both locations.

Make a Messterpiece

Tired of cleaning glitter out of…well, everywhere? Try Make a Messterpiece in The Glen. Kids can explore all kinds of activity centers, each with an educational theme, while also learning the importance of cleaning up after themselves. Make an edible treat in the Creative Kitchen, magic potions in the Experimentation Station (cause and effect is the big lesson here) or a work of art using bubbles and gravity in Bubbleology. Adults can admire from a distance over closed circuit television while they flip through a magazine in Club M. Packages are available for various prices and time commitments.

Peddle Away

Get out of the neighborhood with a bike ride along the North Branch Trail. Brent Knepper, manager of , said that Glenview Road marks about the midpoint on the trail: head south through the forest preserves or north to the Botanic Garden. Parking lots are available about every two to four miles and speed training is prohibited on the trail, making it very family friendly.

Read, Read, Read

Reading for pleasure is fun, but reading with a mission is exhilarating. Fourth and fifth graders can find the reading list for Battle of the Books at the Glenview Public Library. Form a team of four readers to compete in January, testing your knowledge of some really great books, including The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Bunnicula and The Search for Delicious.
