Patch Picks for Fall Fun

Never mind the early sunsets and frosty mornings: there are many ways to enjoy this special time of year.

Sure, summer is fun, what with the pools, picnics and days in the yard. But fall has just as much to offer. Fewer bugs, trees turning color, cooler breezes and delicious treats are just a few reasons to celebrate the changing season. Following are a few events sure to keep your spirits high:

Neighbors of all ages can celebrate  Autumnfest  Saturday, Oct. 1, from 4-7 p.m. at . This is the third year that the Northbrook Park District will host the free community event, which includes live bands, a talent show, costume contest, pie-baking contest, craft show, food vendors and games for participants of all ages. Bonfire at Wagner Farm
Toasted marshmallows and storytelling highlight this annual event at  Saturday, Sept. 24. The bonfire begins at 5 p.m., but the farm will help visitors make their own scarecrows from noon-3 p.m. There are also pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn and mums for sale on site all season.

Community Garage Sale, Glenview
Are you already thinking about holiday gifts and searching for bargains? Or are you trying to offload a few of the items taking up space in your own closet? Glenview's Community Garage Sale will bring buyers and sellers together at the Saturday, Oct. 15, beginning at 9 a.m.


Things get spooky at Northbrook's Sunday, Oct. 16, during the Haunted House Workshop. Communication Specialist Gail Baritz says this weekend activity is planned especially for family fun. Instructor Heidi Ross will lead children ages 5-10 (but parents are welcome to stay, too) through the creation of individual houses using clay; each house will be able to hold a small light to illuminate the frightfully fun features. If you're already thinking spring, you can talk tulips at Red's Garden Center Saturday, Sept. 24. These experts will offer a free seminar about landscape design and critter control to benefit your spring garden. Advance registration is required. After class, expand your knowledge base at the 's Fall Bulb Festival Sept. 30 - Oct. 2. Shop for harvest treats, browse 242 varieties of bulbs, or go on a leaf hunt during this very popular event.
