The folks at Northbrook’s Trout and Grouse turn the pond at Willow Festival into a classroom when students of all ages and skill levels call for instruction in fly fishing, fly tying and casting. Manager Curt Schlesinger said instructors have distilled 30 years of teaching experience down to an easy, hands-on approach that evolves as instructors get to know students and their skills: no two lessons are the same. Different from other hobbies you might consider, Schlesinger says this one lasts a lifetime. “I learned at 16, I’m 42 now, and there’s no end in sight.”

Diane Steinmetz, an associate at Northbrook’s New Mother New Baby, said lots of family members and babysitters participate in these classes – not just expectant moms and dads. “It’s always good to brush up on your first aid skills," she says. "You never know when someone near you is going to get hurt and you’ll want to know how to care for them.” Classes are small and instruction is quite personal, allowing all students to become comfortable with these very important skills.
