The presidents we honor Feb. 21 may differ in their feelings about foreign affairs and domestic spending, but they would probably agree that a day spent with family is second to none. This edition of Patch Picks offers a few ways to celebrate President’s Day locally

Several presidents played golf, but President Eisenhower was the first to have a putting green installed at the White House. Celebrate his legacy with some early work on your swing. Willow Hill says the driving range will be open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday.

The PTO Council is hosting Sideswipe, a martial arts performance team you might have seen on America’s Got Talent. Watch them live Monday at 11 a.m. at . Admission is free, but a donation for the Northfield Food Pantry is requested
Roundball
President Obama has been known to shoot a few hoops; he led Occidental College’s basketball team in scoring in 1979. Work on your own game this President’s Day at the week-long Shoot-a-Thon, which starts Monday, 2:30-4:30 p.m. Entry fee is $5 and proceeds benefit the Strong Kids Fund, which provides scholarships for YMCA programs. Pick up a sponsorship form at the front desk and start stretching, because awards will given out by age group.
Get Moving
Channel Michelle Kwan, the most decorated figure skater in U.S. history (and a member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition) with an afternoon of ice-skating. The North Shore Ice Arena will have extended free style hours Monday from 6-9:10 a.m., 12:10-2:20 p.m. and 4-5:20 p.m.
(On colder days, the Tower Rink behind Northbrook’s is a great place to skate outdoors—it’s even lit during evening hours. It’s named for the water tower you can see from the rink.)
In 1955, Congress passed the Presidential Libraries Act, so that the government would build museums to preserve presidential papers and make them available to the public. In that spirit, consider a trip to Kohl Children’s Museum Monday. The museum (where nothing is “preserved”) will have extended hours Monday, 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
There will be LOTS of activity at this Glenview hub: Anderson Pest Solutions will show off some bugs (10 a.m. – noon); animal shelter will introduce some pets that are looking to be adopted (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.); and the CJE Senior Life Gidwitz Songsters will have an interactive performance of well-known songs (1 p.m.) as part of the museum’s intergenerational programming.
