Supermoon 2013: Local Weather Forecast, When and Where to Watch in Northbrook

Look to the skies Saturday night to catch a glimpse.

So will the skies cooperate over Northbrook so we can all witness the most super "supermoon" this year?

The answer is more than likely. The weather forecast is calling for scattered thunderstorm on Saturday, but maybe with some luck we'll get to see the moon appear super large as it approaches the Earth.

My favorite place for sky gazing is the hill between the Techny prairie and baseball diamond at the Techny park in Northbrook. It's high up, offers an unobstructed view of the sky and you're surrounded by beautiful nature.

On June 22-23, the moon is at perigee — its closest approach to Earth, according to Astronomy magazine's website. The moon will be just 221,824 miles away from us.

So what's the best time to see this Supermoon? EarthSky says the moon will officially be full at 6:32 a.m. CDT Sunday. The actual perigee takes place about 20 minutes prior, according to Astronomy.

Don't want to get up at 6:32 a.m. to see the supermoon? The moon will look just about as full the evening of June 22, according to Astronomy, and it'll be full the evening of June 23.

EarthSky says this is the closest the moon will be to Earth until Aug. 10, 2014.

Happy skywatching!
