Spend a Day in the Kitchen at Northbrook Farmers Market

The Northbrook Farmers Market is celebrating the season's bounty with a fun Day in the Kitchen Wednesday, Sept. 7. The market is held 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Our Lady of the Brook, 3700 Dundee Road.

An outdoor kitchen will be set up, complete with chefs, cooking demos, tastings, kitchen gadgets and more. Seating under a tent will be set up in studio fashion for shoppers to relax and enjoy the interactive shows.

Throughout the morning, professional chefs Brian Greene and his assistant, Jeff Ang, both of M Restaurant, Highland Parkwill shop the market for fresh, in-season fruits and vegetables, and then whip something up for all to enjoy. They also will give lessons in proper knife techniques, how to care for your knives, and essential knives to have in your arsenal.

Pampered Chef representative Kathy Stephans will demonstrate the latest kitchen gadgets, including a corn shaver and other slicers.

Joshua Millman of Passion House Coffee will share his passion for fair-trade gourmet coffees, and Joshua Parkinson, owner of Northbrook's WineStyles will discuss seasonal wines.

Ronald McDonald will visit the market to chat with kids and help out in the kitchen from 11 a.m. to noon. Ryan Freeman of RCJuggles Entertainers will challenge his creative skills by making balloon creations with an emphasis on items found in the kitchen.

Be sure to bring your questions to "ask our experts anything about everything" in the kitchen. Of course, there will be two dozen booths to shop for all kinds of fresh produce and artisan foods.

M Restaurant opened in July with Brian Greene as head chef. He is formerly of Abigail’s American Bistro, Highland Park, and The Purple Pig, Chicago. In addition to cooking at M, Jeff Ang is a personal chef and most recently offered his culinary talents at Tramonto's Steak and Seafood, Wheeling.
