Reading the News

The exhibit on the second and third floors features displays of historic magazines and newspapers from the collection of Laurence Stern, which highlight the lives of Presidents Harry Truman, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson.

Almost all of the collection is original copies, including a Time magazine – “Special Report D-Day” and Life magazine – “Truman and MacArthur at Wake Island.” A newspaper cover from the Milwaukee Journal dated Tuesday, August 14, 1945 reads “War Ended! Truman Tells Nation.” President Truman announces in the front page article that General Douglas MacArthur will accept Japan’s surrender when arrangements are completed.
