'Light and Shadow' Concert Comes to Northbrook

This year's community choir concert, 'ChiaroScuro: Light and Shadow' will premier on Friday, May 31 at the Northbrook Theatre.

The Northbrook Community Choir, a program of the Northbrook Park District, will host a grand concert on Friday, May 31.

Jennifer Whiting will conduct "ChiaroScuro: Light and Shadow" at the intimate Northbrook Theatre. The highly regarded choir will be accompanied by a string quartet, piano and percussion.

The 45-member choir has been rehearsing the show since January, according to the park district. Colleen Aronson, a soprano, calls the weekly rehearsals her "choral yoga."

“The choir members share a love of singing and a desire for learning and growing as musicians, and theyderive satisfaction from coming together to create music that they cannot create on their own,” Jennifer Whiting said in a press release. “There is something spiritually fulfilling about harmonizing with others, and the May 31 concert willbe the culmination of many enjoyable hours of shared work. Everyone who enjoys live choral music should come to hear this special group.”

Chiaroscuro is an Italian term that refers to an artistic technique of contrasting light and dark, Whiting explained in a Q&A with the park district.

"Our concert will present music that contains themes of darkness and light, from Lauridsen's 'Sure on This Shining Night' to an excerpt from Ola Gjeilo's 'Sunrise Mass,'" Whiting said.
