Snow White Musical Coming to Northbrook

A musical version of Snow White, the well-loved fairy tale, opens at the Northbrook Theatre on January 19 with performances on Saturdays at 10:30am and 1pm through February. The show is presented bythe Northbrook Musical Theatre for Young Audiences, the North Shore’s only professional Equity theatre dedicated to the child and family audience.

“This version of the Brothers Grimm story is a feast for the eyes and ears,” said Gregg Dennhardt, Performing Arts Manager for the Northbrook Park District, the producing organization. “It is filled with songs, dances, humor and puppetry. The actors and puppets capture the whimsy and magic of the fairytale.”

In the timeless tale, the beautiful princess flees the Evil Queen and stumbles across a house of seven dwarfs,who befriend and protect her. The musical adaptation was written by Dennhardt and Musical Director Lori Norton. According to Dennhardt, the show can teach children about friendship, teamwork and inner beauty,along with the difference between right and wrong. “The production is faithful to the original story. I didn’twant to destroy it, just update a premier children’s work. Large, plush, doll puppets will be used for six of thedwarfs, which should be fascinating for children to watch.”

A key part of the story is the magic mirror, which knows and sees all and always tells the truth, speaking onlyin rhyme. A magic apple has replaced the poisoned apple of the traditional version, and a new character –Hester the Jester – provides comic relief while advancing the story.

The delightful, fun-filled production is approximately one hour long and designed for family audiences and children in preschool through grade school. After every show, the audience can meet the cast. Reserved seats are $8 in advance and $10 online or at the door.
