Flaky is not a great word for people, but when it comes to croissants, it’s a must. And that’s exactly how the croissants at Winnetka’s Café Fleurette are.
Located in the Metra Station at 754 Elm St., Winnetka, the tiny bakery often sells out of the chocolate croissants by 7:30 a.m.
“It’s wonderful and exciting to stop in here and be able to pick up wonderful baked goods,” Winnetka Village President Jessica Tucker told Patch during the café’s grand opening in August. “When we were looking at bids from businesses we chose Café Fleurette because of its delicious, delicious menu. It’s different and not something already offered in town, plus she already sells goods at Northfield Farmers Market and has a following."

Co-owner and Glencoe resident Rachel Beaudry picks up the baked goods she sells at 5:15 a.m. every morning from La Fournette Bakery in Chicago, which is owned by Pierre Zimmerman, a friend of Beaudry’s husband, Jacquy Pfeiffer, since they did their baking apprenticeships together in France at age 15. They went on to work together at Chicago's French Pastry School. La Fournette opened a few weeks before Café Fleurette and the Winnetka spot is only place to get their goods on the North Shore.
“My wife says Rachel makes the best pain au chocolate and would rather stop in the station than wait for her to be at the farmers market,” Northfield resident Ken Hauff previously told Patch.
Café Fleurette is open from 6-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
