Max and Benny's: A Family Affair For 25 Years

The restaurant, deli and bakery on Waukegan Road celebrates it's 25th year in business.

Max and Benny’s owner Lester Schlan says he got into the restaurant  business because he couldn’t find any good delis on the North Shore. So he started his own, which is now celebrating its 25th year in business. Specialties include traditional deli offerings, themed cookies—like one decorated as a Ron Santo jersey—and the Nosher’s Delight: corned beef and pastrami served between two potato pancakes.

Schlan and his wife Rhea first opened their business on Pfingsten, then moved to their present location on Waukegan Road 15 years ago. The restaurant, deli and bakery is named after their two sons, and Ben Schlan, who currently helps his father run the restaurant, will eventually take over the reins.

Max and Benny’s will be celebrating its anniversary all year long, Schlan says, and customers can expect prizes and specials to commemorate the occasion in the coming months.
