Northbrook Library Ranked in Top 100 Places to Work by 'Chicago Tribune'

The Northbrook Public Library has been in the news lately. On Monday, the library was named one of the top 100 places to work in Chicago by the Chicago Tribune. Last week, Library Journal named it a five star library based on circulation and library visits. 

"The library is what it is and how it is because of Chad Raymond," the library's business manager, Anna Amen, said about the library's executive director, Raymond.. "He inspires people to look for new ideas in serving the community."

The Tribune award was based on employee surveys that began after the library was nominated by a staffer. The Library Journal award was based on 2010 data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services that measures library visits, circulation, program attendance and public Internet computer use.

"The five star award provides validation that we're all doing our jobs in serving the community and their needs," said Sue Anetsberger, the library's spokesperson.

The library received a four star ranking last year and the program is only about five years old. Eligible libraries are divided into categories based on expenditure amount — Northbrook was placed in the $5 to $9.9 million range. Oak Park was the only other Illinois library to receive five stars in that category. 

During the Chicago Tribune's servery, the library had 117 employees, which put it in the small business category. It ranked 34 out of 40 small businesses listed in the top 100.
