Health & Fitness

Do you wish your parents would talk to you about their future plans?

Sometimes it is difficult for seniors to talk with their spouse or families about what they might want to happen in the future when their health eventually declines.

Do you wish that your parent/s would talk to you about their future plans or maybe even let you help them sort out their needs and options?

Have you ever heard one of them say, “It’s my life, so you can stay out of it.”, “You will not be controlling me!”, “You just want to put me in a home, or maybe you really wish I were dead!!!”

After those kinds of very distressing and misunderstood attempts, you might just give up! It’s no fun hitting the same brick walls time and time again.

Here are some key statements you could use next time to help set a very gentle and positive framework for your next attempt at having this conversation.

Communicate to them that you love them and you want to partner with them to be sure that things in the future happen the way they want them to.

You might start by saying, “Dad (Mom), I need your help.  I need you to talk with me about a few key topics so that I will be able to do all I can to help you make things turn out the way you want them in the future.

Would you help me know what YOU want to have happen in the future, so I can partner with you and support you in making those things happen, as much as possible?

That’s all I am asking of you.  Will you help me with that now ..so I can provide the kind of help you will want later?
