Baseball Report - GBN Freshman A Splite Double Header with Strong Maine South

Once again, GBN freshman ace, David Burnside was called upon to pitch in a tough match up with rival Maine South on Saturday.  Burnside was strong in this one allowing only three hits and notching six strikeouts over seven innings but came up short as the Spartans fell 2-1 in a classic pitching duel.   

Many of the Northbrook players on this year’s GBN freshman team have known numerous close games with players from the Maine South squad and the two programs have always played each other very closely.  Today’s games were no different. 

In the second game of the double header, Brandon Labunski threw 4 innings giving up four runs and striking out three while allowing four runs.  Adam Wagner came on in relief but struggled to locate pitches and was removed before recording an out.  Sage Bruhl then came on and was able to help stop a potential rally for Maine South.  However, two more runs scored in the Maine South half of the inning.  In the prior inning, GBN had captured the lead following a bases clearing double by David Burnside and the team was hoping they could maintain the lead in this game.  

After giving up the lead to Maine South in the top of the fifth, GBN successfully came back to win in the bottom half by scoring two runs.  The final score of the contest was 7-6.  

Notable hitting performances were provided by David Burnside, Matt Tedeschi, Robert Stocking, and Jake Rabin.  The defense was sound in both games recording only one error between both contests.  

The Spartans play again on Monday against rival Deerfield at Glenbrook North.  Game time is 4:45 PM.
