GBN Baseball Report - Freshman A Win With Power of David Burnside and Brice Call

GBN Freshman-A Pound Out Victory Against Highland Park to Improve to 23-5

On Thursday in Highland Park, the GBN Freshman A team took their second game of the week against the Highland Park Giants.  Starting for the Spartans, Brice Call gave six strong innings while recording two strikeouts and only five hits.  Coming on in relief to close the game, Brandon Labunski was perfect in one inning of work.

The hitting was powered by David Burnside (2B, 3B), Brice Call (1B, 3B), and Sage Bruhl (1B, 2B).  Once again the Spartans were able to take advantage of Giant pitching in the first inning powered by Bruhl's leadoff single and steal, Witty's walk, and Burnside's monstrous three base bomb to centerfield which forced the centerfielder to chase the ball down as it sailed nearly 50 feet over his head in the non-fenced freshman field.

The defense was solid in this game recording no errors and notching one 6-4-3 double play.  Notable catches were tallied by David Burnside and Justin Tucker in the outfield averting a Highland Park rally in the process.  Tedeschi gave a strong effort behind the plate keeping Highland Park runners from advancing on passed balls and eliminating any running game they might have hoped to create.

Additional support to the 9-2 victory was provided by Jake Rabin who had a strong showing at the plate reaching safely on three occasions via the base on balls and notching a stolen base.  Peter Witty was also instrumental in providing a suicide squeeze bunt in the fifth inning that helped give GBN additional insurance en route to the victory.

The GBN Freshman play at home on Saturday again at 10:30 A.M. against Maine South.  This should be a very tough game as the Maine South program represents some of the strongest baseball in the area.
