GBN Freshman A Baseball Hit and Hit and Hit Their Way to a 24-1 Rout of Conant

GBN Freshman A Baseball Hit and Hit and Hit Their Way to 24-1 Rout of Conant

The GBN Freshman-A team continues to have an impressive ability to score runs in the first 10 games of the young spring season, and Saturday was no different.  Playing away against Conant, the powerful freshman A squad jumped out to an early lead in the first game of a double header behind the crushing power of Matt Tedeschi and Brandon Labunki’s first inning homeruns.  However, after leaping out to their 4-0 lead, the Spartan squad was unable to sustain it and relinquished the lead in the third inning because of errors and excessive walks.

Eventually, the Conant Cougars were able to take the lead for good in the fifth inning and the Spartans were left wondering if they could crawl out of the 10-4 hole in which they found themselves.  Undeterred, despite the poor defensive performance and lapses in pitching, they found themselves in a position to still win the game in their half of the seventh but could not bring two runners in scoring position home.

Dropping game one 10-9, only their second loss in nine tries, the Spartans saddled up for game two and came out attacking at the plate.  They scored nine runs in the first inning and never looked back.  Amazingly, the entire team hit and hit and hit and when the dust had eventually settled the Freshman-A squad had pounded the Cougars convincingly 24-1.

Pitching in game two, Adam Wagner was able to hold Cougar hitters to only one run despite some early control trouble.  Wagner then settled down and gained control of the strike zone allowing his defense to make plays and get outs.  The offense, which has averaged over 10 runs a game for the first ten games was highlighted by Matt Tedeschi’s second homerun of the day, a grand slam shot.  In addition, Robert Stocking and Sage Bruhl lifted shots back to back over the right field fence in the fourth inning.

“It’s incredible the offensive power this team displays, and we are really never out of any game because of their ability to hit," said Coach Ryan Graham.
