GBN Wins in Dramatic Fashion - Bruhl Singles to Drive in Two Runs in the Seventh for a Walkoff Victory

Bruhl comes up with walk off hit in bottom of seventh to down GBS 5-4.

The rivalry between the District 225 Glenbrook schools continued Saturday on the baseball diamond at Glenbrook North High School with the Spartans coming out the victors in dramatic fashion. During the GBN Sophomore season, Jared Epstein has discovered Coach Izenstarck is most likely to hand him the ball when the toughest opponents are on the schedule.  Epstein has not disappointed either turning in consistently dominant performances on the mound while giving his team a significant boost at the plate.

During this game, the Spartans found themselves in a pitching duel with Epstein and GBS's hard throwing Stadler matching each other pitch for pitch.  Early in the contest, the Spartans were able to take advantage of brief stints of wildness by the tall righty to go up 2-1.  But then the Titans were able to come back and take the lead 3-2 lead after two outs in the fourth inning with two unearned runs.  The Titans added to the lead in the fifth to go up 4-2 while the Spartans answered to trim the lead to one again.

Coming on in relief in the sixth inning, Danny Ahern pitched masterfully keeping the Titan batters from scoring another run to give GBN a chance to win this game in the later innings.  As the Spartans entered the seventh inning, they were successful in loading the bases but had two outs when lead off hitter Sage Bruhl came to the plate.  Having already had three strong at bats previously including a walk and HBP, Bruhl knew he had to be patient to find his pitch and give his team a chance to win this game.  Taking the count to a 2-2 count, he found a pitch he could drive and hit a hard liner past the second baseman to score two and win the game.

After the game, Coach Izenstarck was extremely pleased with the boys performance and was especially congratulatory with his team's pitching performance.  When asked about the pitching this season, Izenstarck said, "This team reminds me of the boys who I had two years ago when they were sophomores.  I have five or six extremely reliable starters and can count on the fact we will be in every game with a chance to win it because of our strong pitching."

The Spartans return to action at Maine East High School on Monday at 4:45 PM.
