ComEd reports 660,000 customers are without power

Thunderstorm causes outages, fallen branches and trees throughout Northbrook.

According to ComEd, 660,000 Chicago-area customers are without power due to severe thunderstorms in the area. The majority of outages are in the north suburbs, which includes Northbrook, with 298,000 without electricity.

A ComEd spokesman said that due to the severity of the storm restoring power will be a multi-day effort.

“There are nearly 400 crews out currently working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.”

Northbrook Public Works director Kelly Hamill said the storm front moved through Northbrook at 8:45 a.m. Monday, hitting the village with 71 mph winds and a quarter inch of rain. The hardest hit areas were south of Walters Avenue and west of Western Avenue.

“We have received about 50 calls for storm damage and approximately another 20 requesting information about power outages,” Hamill said.

Many of the callers have reported fallen branches, with fewer than 10 reports of downed trees. Crews were recalled to the Public Works facility during the storm for safety, but were back out in the field by 9 a.m. cleaning up debris.

Public Works has placed barricades with stop signs at the intersection of Dundee and Sanders roads. There are also flashing traffic signal lights on Pfingsten Road at Techny and Koepke roads.
