Northbrook and Glenview's village presidents, Sandy Frum and Kerry Cummings, have signed proclamations declaring April 19 as “Organ Donation Awareness Day.”

Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, a not-for-profit organ procurement organization that coordinates organ and tissue donation and provides public education on donation in Illinois and northwest Indiana and Astellas Pharma, US Inc. have collaborated together with the hopes of encouraging the Northbrook and Glenview communities to learn more about organ donation and register their decision to donate.

Quick facts about organ donation:

  • 117,000 people in the U.S. are awaiting an organ transplant – including more than 5,000 people in Illinois.
  • A person is added to the national organ transplant waiting list in the U.S. every 10 minutes.
  • In 2012, more than 300 people in Illinois and 6,500 people nationwide died while waiting for an organ transplant.
  • Each year, 28,000 Americans receive a donated organ.
