Storm Pummels Northbrook, Leaving Trees Down And Power Out

A severe thunderstorm swept through Northbrook Tuesday night.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday night, winds swept up, power went out and everything got quiet except for the rumble of thunder.

The that passed through town brought wind speeds up to 81 miles per hour in Wheeling, according to the National Weather Service. In Northbrook, tornado sirens went on at 8:50 p.m., according to the village.

Immediately following the storm, police scanned the streets for downed power lines, tree branches and power outages at intersections. Public works crews cleared streets with front end loaders and set up barricades and flares.

Electricity went out in the center of town during the storm and continued to remain out more than 48 hours after the storm passed. Due to the heavy volume of outages in northern Cook County, .

On Tuesday night, police placed flares at Shermer and Meadow roads, where traffic lights were out. At the intersection of Cherry Lane and Greenbriar Road, a tree had fallen across half of Cherry Lane, pulling power lines with it. While police checked out the damage, so did kids and families, who walked the streets near Cherry Lane with flashlights.
