Lily Show to be held July 6-7 at Chicago Botanic Garden

Please consider attending or exhibiting. You do
not have to be a member to exhibit a lily in competition, or to enter a floral
display utilizing lilies.

"Oscar
Night," is the theme for our 54th annual show which will  be held on July 6-7 at the Chicago Botanic Garden, in the Education Center. (Themes apply only to
floral arrangements, NOT to entry of stems in the horticultural competition.)

HORTICULTURAL Entries:  Those wishing to enter stems of lilies have a
wide number of choices -- either individual stems, or collections of
three.  You DO NOT need to be a member,
or an expert at raising lilies! In the past, some gardeners were slow to bring
stems because they were unsure of their names, or how to classify them. Don't
worry -- we have a very cheerful classification committee whose members will
help members name their stems and place them properly in their classes. If you
know the name: great! If you don’t, but have a lovely lily, bring it anyway! If
the committee can’t class it, we just enter it as an unnamed seedling. Also, we
have a catch-all class for novices...those who are entering for the first time.
There, we will judge easy.

The
stem has to have at least one bud fully opened. Ideally, buds or open flowers
should be placed all around the stem (but we all have those that seem to be
heavier on one side or another, so don’t let that stop you). You should cut
your stems as tall as possible, but need to remember that you should cut no
more than the top half, because the stem will need the remaining foliage to
gain strength for next year.

Please
check our Facebook page in the next few days, for further information. More
details will be posted there on how to enter . www.facebook.com/wisconsinillinoislilysociety
Please “Like” our page to received lily news in the future, and connect with
others who grow and enjoy lilies.

If you are entering your stems in the annual Lily Show, bring them to the
Education Center in the Botanic Garden on the morning of July 6.

Entries may be placed from 7 to 10:30 am.

Judging is from 10:30 to noon.

The show is open to the public for viewing from noon to 4:30 pm on Saurday, and
from 10 am to 4:30 on
Sunday.

I hope  you will enter, or at least
attend to view the stems and the arrangements! It’s a great opportunity to see
some varieties you have read about but have never seen live.

To transport your stems safely, a good way is to place the stems in water
filled soft drink bottles (glass is good, if you have them), then space those
inside a wine bottle case with dividers, so the flowers don’t touch.
