Regina Dominican's Leadership Insititute Hosts Sister Mary Scullion

On February 10, the Regina Dominican Leadership Institute’s Speaker Series will welcome Sister Mary Scullion, RSM, co-founder and executive director of Project HOME.

Named in 2009 as one of Time magazine’s “World’s 100 Most Influential People,” Sister Mary will hold an evening presentation “Changing the World through Faith, Community and Leadership” at 7 p.m. in Regina Dominican’s O’Shaughnessy Theater, 701 Locust Road, Wilmette, IL. This presentation is free and open to the public.

In 1989, Sister Mary Scullion co-founded Project HOME, along with Joan Dawson McConnon. Project HOME’s mission is to empower adults, children, and families to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty and to alleviate the underlying causes of poverty.  Its initiatives include supportive housing, employment opportunities, healthcare, and education. Project HOME has become a nationally recognized program providing solutions to homelessness and poverty.

Sister Mary Scullion has been involved in service work and advocacy for homeless and mentally ill persons since 1978. She is also a powerful voice on political issues affecting homelessness. Her advocacy efforts resulted in the right of homeless persons to vote, as well as a landmark federal court decision that affects the fair housing rights of persons with disabilities.

Sister Mary has received numerous awards and honorary doctorates for her leadership in the City of Philadelphia, including the 1992 Philadelphia Award. In 2002, Sister Mary was awarded an Eisenhower Fellowship and, that same year, she and Project HOME co-founder, Joan Dawson McConnon, were national awardees of the Ford Foundation's prestigious "Leadership for a Changing World Award." In 2011, Sister Mary Scullion and Ms. McConnon received the Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame, the most prestigious honor given to American Catholics.

The Regina Dominican Leadership Institute supports innovative practices that include the Leadership Institute Scholar Program, project-based learning strategies, the Leadership Institute Speaker Series, and school-wide leadership enrichment activities.

Regina Dominican, a college preparatory Catholic high school for young women, sponsored by the Adrian Dominicans, fosters academic excellence, truth, peace, and justice while challenging each student to develop leadership for life and respect for all races, cultures and faiths.
