Hill Road Is Alive With The Sound Of Music

In many "new construction" homes, audio speakers, cable hookups, internet access, home theatres and various other media connections are considered key elements that the residents will require, and designed into the building plans from the very start.

But what about a house built in an era of rabbit ears antennas and snazzy blond Zenith HiFi cabinets? Where albums of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass provided foot-tapping, shoulder-swaying, finger-snapping sound. How can a house built in 1951 join in with all things music and sound available in 2013?

We called Matt Cwiokowski at Avidia in Winnetka and asked if he knew a way to get music playing throughout a beautiful 3,000 sq. ft. "mid-century" house. He did, and it was the Sonos PLAY:3 wireless streaming music speaker system.

Matt came over to 1250 Hill Road with six small speakers and plugged them into electric outlets in rooms throughout the house. He then plugged in a small white box about as big as an eyeglass case which had a place to connect an iPod, iPhone or iPad. We connected the devices - and - Hill Road Came Alive With The Sound Of Music.

A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. You can easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. You can create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your speakers.

Avidia, Matt and Sonos made the music happen and the Hill Road house even more fun and lovely than ever.
And we can still listen to Herb Alpert, as long as he's on our iPod playlist.
