It’s hard to heal the whole world in a day, but it never hurts to try. Members of Temple Beth-El in Northbrook and members of the community are invited to give their time, energy and talent to participate in a variety of Mitzvot to assist the community on Sunday, May 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“This will be a day that unites the entire Temple Beth-El family, young and the young at heart,

in Tikkun Olam (Repair of the World),” said Rabbi Sidney Helbraun of Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook. “For our membership and interested members of the community,” Rabbi Helbraun added, “here is your opportunity to get involved, do a mitzvah, and see the beauty of your involvement for years to come.”

Volunteer activities are for all ages. For additional information, contact Janice Hadesman, Director of Family and Congregational Life, Temple Beth-El at 847.205.9982 ext 211 or jhadesman@templebeth-el.org.

“Among the Mitzvah Day volunteer opportunities are to decorate a flower pot and plant a beautiful plant for the residents in CJE (Council for Jewish Elderly) housing facilities. In addition, creating and sending greeting cards to both American and Israeli soldiers, wounded and separated from loved ones, who deeply appreciate words of encouragement,” said Hadesman.

“Many people who need eye glasses cannot afford them. We have collected eye glasses and need volunteers to help us create special holders to protect the lenses,” added Hadesman.

Other volunteer assistance is needed to make nutritious snacks for those in need. Healthy and enjoyable cookies will be delivered to the Northfield Food Pantry. “When you give food to a hungry person, give him your best and sweetest food,” said Hadesman.

HIAS Chicago assists people through the immigration process. Volunteers will create learning materials to help prepare students pass their interview to become U S Citizens.

There is a volunteer opportunity for everyone who wishes to be a part of Mitzvah Day at Temple Beth-El on Sunday, May 20,” said Hadesman.  “We encourage the entire community to join us.”
