Child's Play

Kindergarten 'meet and greet' gone bad...but not too bad! Thank goodness the other parents have a sense of humor too....well, I hope anyway!

My son had his 'teacher visit' this morning. All the boys were invited to the classroom at a designated time. While the kids played, wrote their names and learned all about the first day, the parents introduced themselves and mingled.

My son and a few other boys began putting together a puzzle and were working together, laughing and enjoying one another's company.  The parent conversation turned to the upcoming school year and plans for playdates in the near future. We exchanged names, numbers, etc.

One of the dads told his son, 'Let's get going.  We are meeting Chucky for lunch!' My son looked up and said with a frightened edge to his voice, 'Oh my!'

While I knew right where this was headed, the dad looked confused and added, 'Not Chucky Cheese! Just a friend of mine named Chucky!' My son looked up from the puzzle and said, 'I am not talking about Chucky Cheese, I thought you were talking about Chucky the killer!'

Oh yes, as in 'Hi, I'm Chucky, wanna play?' The 1988 thriller movie, Child's Play, about the doll that isn't such a great gift after all.  While the dad was scrapping his mouth off the floor, I tried to justify that my son knew about that movie only from conversations from his older cousins.

After the dad had his mouth off the floor he said, 'Does he mean the....' As I said, 'So when did you want to set up that playdate? We have a great movie selection!'

And so grade school begins!  Who wants to play?
