Back to Reality

It's been a sobering couple of weeks for the CDH community. It feels like it's been an especially rough week with more children passing away from CDH than "normal".

The elation and adrenaline coming off of the successful April 19th Chicago Parade of Cherubs unfortunately didn't last long.  It's been a sobering couple of weeks for the CDH community.  It feels like it's been an especially rough week with more children passing away from CDH than "normal" and too many being rushed to the ER with complications.

Here's the reality:

  • 52,000 children per year are affected by CDH
  • 50% or 26,000 DO NOT SURVIVE
  • 1600 children per year are diagnosed with CDH in the US -- with only 800 surviving
  • 4 children are born every day in the US with CDH
  • Every day, 2 children die from CDH in the US alone
  • The ones that do survive often have multiple surgeries and frequent visits to the ER

This is a very real birth defect.  It is not rare.  1 in every 2,500 babies is born with CDH.
