Neal Pagano, 46, died at his Glenview home on Sunday, according to police. He died after falling into a fire pit, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Pagano was found by two of his children lying in their backyard, the Chicago Tribune reports.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, Pagano's cause of death is a spinal fracture, incurred when he fell into the pit. They have classified the death as an accident.
"It's not suspicious in nature but we're not sure why he died, so it's still an open investigation," said Sgt. Jim Foley of the Glenview Police Department. Foley confirmed that Pagano was found by a juvenile.
The pit had not been used for a fire around the time of the accident, the Chicago Tribune reports.
