Northbrook Obituary: Dr. Rafael Machado, 87
Dr. Machado immigrated from Cuba and became chairman of the anesthesiology department at St. Francis Hospital as well as president of the hospital staff.
Dr. Rafael Machado, age 87, passed away March 19, 2014 at his residence in Northbrook, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Havana, Cuba September 29, 1926, he emigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1961 in search of freedom for himself and his family. His residency in anesthesiology was at the University of Illinois under the mentorship of his friend the late Dr. Max Sadove.
He was appointed to the Medical Staff at St. Francis Hospital of Evanston in 1965, appointed Medical Director of Inhalation Therapy 1968, appointed Chairman of the Section of Anesthesiology 1970, appointed Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology 1973, elected President of the St. Francis Hospital Medical/Dental Staff 1985, retiring from medical practice in 1991. He was an active member of the Cuban Medical Association in Exile, cared deeply about his patients and was an inspiration to many medical interns and residents. He gave generously to his family and community.
Wonderful husband of Olga Maria nee Chappotin; beloved father of Rafael, M.D. (Marilyn), Emilio (Leslie) and Richard (Dawn); cherished grandfather of 10; dear brother of the late Eduardo, M.D. (Pilar) Machado; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.
