Car Hits Bicyclist at Angle, Shermer Crossing

A bicyclist crossing Angle Avenue at Shermer Road was struck by a car about 6:15 p.m. today, police said.

The driver, Lee Waldoch of Mount Prospect,  said he and his wife, Heather, were trying to decide whether to make a right or a left on their way home from the dentist when the accident occurred.

"It happened so fast," Waldoch said. "All of a sudden, he was there."

The 18-year-old cyclist was riding on the sidewalk when he was hit crossing Angle. He was heading east on Shermer toward Waukegan Road.

By 6:25 p.m., police had blocked off Angle from traffic. Five minutes later, the bicyclist was inside an ambulance. Waldoch said the cyclist had hurt his leg and bruised his arm.

"I hope he's OK," said Heather, noting that the cyclist mentioned he had a job interview tomorrow.

Waldoch said he tried to dial 911 immediately, but couldn't get his cell phone to work, so the bicyclist used his phone.

"I was so nervous I didn't push send," Waldoch said.

By 6:38, the bicyclist was headed off in the ambulance and police cars were departing the scene as well.
