Blotter: $15,700 Wire Transfer Scam; Mom, Daughter Busted

The police incidents were reported from Aug. 2-7.

$15,700 Wire Transfer Scam
A resident of Mayapple Lane sent $15,700 via Western Union on Aug. 3, after someone who claimed to be his nephew called to say he was in Mexico and needed money. Afterward, the man realized that his nephew was not in Mexico and did not need money, according to police.

Mom and Daughter Charged 
When police went to help with a fire department call for a patient who said she “felt like she was going to die,” they learned that the mother and daughter at the scene had just finished smoking pot. Officers found a cannabis pipe and issued tickets for the possession of drug paraphernalia to Darla E. Levinson, 60, and Ariel M. Levinson, 21, both of Northbrook, according to police.

DUI Arrest 
William A. Marmolejo, 23, of Wilmette, was stopped for a traffic violation at Landwehr Road and Sunset Trail on Aug. 1 and subsequently charged with driving with expired registration, failing to signal and driving under the influence of drugs.

Ismael Lopez-Romero, 25, of Zion, was stopped for a traffic violation Aug. 6 at Dundee and Lee roads. Police arrested and charged Romero with driving under the influence and two counts of improper lane usage, according to the report.

Kelly Ann Majcher, 31, of Brownsburg, IN, was stopped at Dundee and Lee roads Aug. 6 after police received a report of a suspicious vehicle blocking the roadway. She was arrested and charged with blocking the roadway and driving under the influence.

Burglary on Scotch Pine Lane
A resident of Scotch Pine Lane reported that several pieces of jewelry went missing from her bedroom after she had friends visiting her home Aug. 3, according to police.

Break-in on Lee Road
A resident of Lee Road came home Aug. 3 to find both her front and back doors open, according to police. It was not immediately determined whether any items were stolen.

Attempted Burglary on Woodbine Lane
Timothy M. Philbin, 21, of Northbrook, was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and underage drinking. Philbin was 20 at the time of his apprehension, which occurred after he and a companion were caught trying to break into the garage of a Woodbine Lane home Aug. 3, according to police. The two suspects fled on bicycles but officers eventually caught them. Police released the second individual without charges. 

Burglary on Linden Road
A resident of Linden Road came home Aug. 5 to find the doors open and the house ransacked with numerous items missing, according to police.

Teens Caught Drinking, Out Past Curfew
Police caught three 15-year-old boys, one 16-year-old boy and one 17-year old boy from Winnetka along with one 15-year-old boy from Northbrook parked behind a building at Village Square Shopping Center at 1:42 a.m. Aug. 2. They were out past curfew, had consumed alcohol and had drug paraphernalia in their possession, according to police. The boys were issued citations for all three offenses and released to their parents at the scene.

Driving With a Suspended License
Jason E. Newkirk, 23, of Des Plaines, was stopped for a traffic violation at Landwehr Road and Sunset Trail on Aug. 1. He was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license, according to police.

Doorbell Prankster Turns Nasty
A resident of Auburn Lane reported that someone rang her doorbell about 50 times around 1:15 a.m. Aug. 5. When she came to the door, there was a box on the front steps filled with feces and urine, according to police.

Broken Car Window
The window was broken to a car parked in a driveway on Woodlawn Road on Aug. 5, according to police. Damage was estimated at $500.

Teens Shoot Slingshots
Two 16-year-old boys from Northbrook were charged with criminal damage to property after they admitted to breaking the overhead lights at Westmoor School with slingshots on July 31, police reported. 

Boulder Breaks Window
A medium-sized boulder was thrown through the front windshield of a vehicle parked on Illinois Road, according to police.

$290 iPhone Case Stolen
A store employee observed a man spending a long time looking at different items in the Louis Vuitton store at Northbrook Court on Aug. 6. When the man left, store employees discovered that a $290 leather iPhone case that the man had been looking at was missing, according to police.

Stolen Schwinn Bicycle
A red boy’s 24-inch Schwinn Frontier bicycle valued at $100 was stolen from the front of a residence on Walters Avenue on Aug. 3, according to police.
