Blotter: 2 DUIs; $8,000 Bracelet Stolen; Port-A-Potty Vandal Strikes At Shabonee

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Firas Kaplani, 41, of Wheeling, was stopped for a traffic violation and arrested Saturday, July 16, at Willow and Landwehr roads. He was charged with improper lane usage, two counts of violating the median, speeding, driving under the influence and improper transportation of alcohol, according to police. 

April J. Mynes, 36, of Glenview, was arrested at Dundee and Shermer roads Sunday, July 17, and charged with three counts of improper lane usage and driving under the influence, according to police.

CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL BY A MINOR

After receiving a call about a suspicious person in the bushes at Northbrook Court Sunday, July 10, police took Valle Rey Martinez, 19, of Glenview, into custody and issued him a local ordinance ticket for consumption of alcohol by a minor. According to police, Martinez was found near a blue Toyota at the mall, smelling strongly of alcohol and with what appeared to be vomit on his clothes.

$8,000 TENNIS BRACELET STOLEN IN HILLSIDE ROAD BURGLARY

A resident of Hillside Road reported that his or her home was broken into and the master bedroom was ransacked sometime on Friday, July 15, according to police. A tennis bracelet valued at $8,000 was missing, although police are still investigating the crime. The burglar obtained entry through an open window, according to police.

BURGLARY ON FIELDWOOD DRIVE

A resident of Fieldwood Drive reported that someone entered the garage and stole a set of golf clubs worth $160 from a golf bag sometime between Wednesday, July 13, and Thursday, July 14, according to police.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY ON MICHELLINE LANE

A resident of Michelline Lane reported that she noticed that the sliding doors on her rear patio had been damaged Thursday, July 14. She told police she was out running errands between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. that day and noticed the damage when she got back.

BURGLARY ON SKOKIE BOULEVARD

A Dell laptop computer was reported stolen from a building on Skokie Boulevard, Monday, July 11, according to police. Sometime between Friday, July 8, and Monday, July 11, a 3-by-8-foot window on the north side of the building was shattered and the laptop on the desk next to the computer went missing.

SHOPLIFTING WITH POT IN HER PURSE

Rachel M. Kaplan, 28, of Highland Park, was arrested Wednesday, July 13, at Nordstrom Rack and charged with retail theft, possession of cannabis and possession of paraphernalia, according to police. She was allegedly seen wandering around the fashion jewelry section, ripping tags off jewelry and hiding them in her purse, where a glass pipe and leafy green substance were found, police reported.

IDENTITY THEFT

A resident of Picardy Circle told police on Monday, July 11, that he was receiving collection bills from AT&T for late payments, but that the accounts for which he was being billed were not ones he had actually used or set up.

STOLEN PURSE, PICNIC TABLE

A woman reported that her purse was taken from a shelf by the entrance of a restaurant on the 1100 block of Church Street sometime Sunday, July 10, according to police. Valued at $100, the purse contained various cards, IDs and cash.

A man reported that someone took a wooden picnic table from the south end of a property in the 3300 block of Dundee Road sometime between 7 p.m. Sunday, July 10, and the morning of Tuesday, July 13, according to police.

PORT-A-POTTY GETS BEAT UP

An officer observed a port-a-potty lying on its side on the west side of Shabonee School while on patrol Wednesday, July 13. Upon examination, the officer found an impact mark and depression in the plastic wall, at a height consistent with that of a vehicle’s bumper. Inside, the officer found that the end of the toilet paper roll had been set on fire, and there were scorch marks on the other wall. The toilet seat had also been broken off.

POLICE STATION SIGN GETS GRAFFITIED

The phrase “F*** da” was observed spray-painted in black on the upper portion of the police department’s sign at the station on Landwehr Road, according to police. The graffiti was spray-painted sometime between Saturday, July 9, and Friday, July 15, police reported.

GRAFFITI SCRAWLED AT THE SKATE PARK

An officer observed black graffiti on one of the picnic tables inside the skate park at Techny Park and Prairie Sunday, July 10, according to police.
