Blotter: $20,000 Stolen From Leonard's Bakery; $3,000 in Merchandise Stolen from Victoria's Secret

The police blotter for Nov. 23-28.

$20,000 STOLEN FROM LEONARD'S BAKERY SAFE

Approximately $20,000 in U.S currency and customer's checks was stolen from the company safe sometime between 6:00 p.m. Nov. 23 and 2:00 a.m. Nov. 24, police reported.  The safe showed no signs of forced entry.

Tori Amedee-Jones, 23, of Skokie, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident Nov. 24 at Willow Rd. and Ravine Way, police reported. He was also charged with driving under the influence, crossing the center line, driving with a revoked license and reckless driving. Amedee-Jones was released on bond.

SUSPECT CHARGED WITH DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE FLED ON FOOT

Michael Rigoni Jr., 25, of Island Lake, was arrested and charged with improper lane usage, failure to give information and driving under the influence Nov. 25, after an off-duty police officer saw the defendant's vehicle pull into a gas station with both driver's side tires blown out.  The police officer who reported to the scene questioned the defendant, who was unstable on his feet and unable to speak intelligibly. The defendant then fled on foot. Police searched for approximately one hour before finally locating Rigoni. He was transported first to Glenbrook Hospital, then to the police department, where he was processed and released on bond.

DRIVING WITH SUSPENDED LICENSE

Gilberto Valencia-Ortega, 22, of Glenview, was arrested Nov. 23 at Waukegan and Willow roads, police reported. He was charged with driving with suspended registration, driving with a suspended license, never having a license issued and failing to reduce speed.  He was processed and released on bond.

SMELL OF "BURNT CANNABIS" LEADS TO DRUG POSSESSION CHARGES

After detecting the smell of "burnt cannabis" at a routine traffic stop Nov. 23, police arrested five boys ages 16 and 17, at Shermer Rd. and Sherman Dr., police reported. They were charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. All five admitted to the charges and were released to the custody of their parents, pending a court date.

Brian Shin, 21, of Northbrook, was arrested Nov. 23 and charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia at Spring Hill Dr., police reported.  He was released on bond.

Joshua Fisher, 22, of Evergreen Park, was charged with three counts of possession of paraphernalia and possession of cannabis Nov. 25, after an officer observed him sitting in his car on Marshall Rd., handling rolling papers. When the officer detected a strong smell of burnt cannabis after the defendant rolled down his window, the officer and his K9 partner, Rex, then conducted a search of the vehicle's exterior. The defendant was released on bond.

BREAKING CURFEW TO SEE HIS GIRLFRIEND

At 1:36 a.m. Nov. 24, a police officer noticed a juvenile riding his bike. When he approached, the 15-year-old said he was going to see his girlfriend, and admitted that his parents did not know he was out after his curfew. The police officer also found tobacco in the 15-year-old's possession. After being issued citations, the juvenile was released to the custody of his mother.

MERCHANDISE STOLEN FROM VICTORIA'S SECRET AND MACY'S

Giffin Clark, 18, of Highland Park, was charged with retail theft Nov. 26, after he was observed removing the lining from a jacket at Macy's and leaving the store without paying for it.  Store security stopped him but he pulled away and fled on foot into the mall. When police called his cell phone, A cell number was the defendant picked up and admitted the theft.  He was issued a ticket and released.

Sometime between 8:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Nov. 27, someone took approximately $3,000 worth of display merchandise from a Victoria's Secret at Northbrook Court, police reported.  No information is known about the perpetrator.

BURGLARY TO AN AUTO

An unknown person rummaged through the glove box of an unlocked van at the Northbrook Public Library sometime between Nov. 24 and 25, police reported.  The van's owner found the door and the glove box open, but nothing was missing.

A resident of Dunhill Ct. flagged down an officer Nov. 27,and reported that someone had entered his vehicle while it was parked in his driveway, and removed two Blackberrys, $20 and assorted gift cards. Losses were estimated at more than $1,000.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO AN AUTO

Police investigated a report that the driver's side window of a vehicle was broken while it was parked in a driveway on Dunhill Ct. Nothing appears to be missing, according to police, however damage was estimated at $500.

STOLEN WALLET

A woman's wallet was stolen from inside her purse while she was shopping in the 100 block of Skokie Rd. Nov. 28.  The wallet contained miscellaneous credit cards and I.Ds.

The above items come from Northbrook Police Department reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
