Blotter: Fox Lake Warrant Arrest, Felony Credit Card Fraud

The police report for June 4-11.

The items below come from Northbrook Police Department reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

WARRANT ARREST

Ernest J. Castelli, 44, of Fox Lake, was arrested Thursday, June 9, at Pfingsten Road and Wilshire Lane on an outstanding warrant for driving under the influence, according to police. He was transported to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Jail in Waukegan.

FELONY CREDIT CARD FRAUD

An officer stopped a suspicious vehicle Friday, June 10, and recovered a credit card from the juvenile driver, who said he had been given the card by Brigitte L. Paul, 18, of Northbrook, according to police. When an officer questioned Paul on Saturday, June 11, she allegedly told him that she took the card from a friend’s car and gave it to some other friends, suggesting that they use it. At least four attempts were made to use the card, police reported. Paul was arrested on Landwehr Road Saturday, June 11, and charged with felony unlawful possession of a credit card.

MARIJUANA POSSESSION

Daniel A. Karpowicz, 26, and Eric E. Karpowicz, 25, both of Northbrook, were issued local ordinance tickets for the possession of cannabis Friday, June 10, in the 600 block of Lee Road, according to police. Both cases were dismissed by the State's Attorney's Office on Aug. 31.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY ON MACARTHUR BOULEVARD

A thief used a large rock to smash a window on the north side of a commercial building at MacArthur Boulevard and Melvin Drive sometime between Saturday, June 4, and Monday, June 6, according to police. The burglar took an HP laptop computer and a docking station. Total losses amounted to $1,573.99, police reported.

IDENTITY THEFT

A resident of Concord Court received a letter from a debt collection agency  regarding two checks allegedly written in her name in May, according to police. Totaling $352.32, the checks came from a bank she had never heard of. The woman told police her wallet was stolen in July 2010, and that since then she had cancelled credit cards and placed a fraud alert with credit reporting bureaus. Police advised her to contact the credit reporting agencies a second time and ask for a second fraud alert.

SUSPENDED LICENSES

Lauren A. Gatt, 28, of Deerfield, was arrested Friday, June 10, at Valencia Drive and Shermer Road and charged with driving with a suspended license, according to police.

Adrian Arismendis, 40, of Prospect Heights, was arrested Saturday, June 11, at Dundee and Shermer roads and charged with driving with a suspended license, police reported.

FAKE CASH RETURNS AT DO IT BEST HARDWARE

Theodore K. Grasso, 21, of Northbrook, was issued a citation for theft Saturday, June 11, after he allegedly made two fraudulent returns for cash while using someone else’s credit card without permission, according to police. The returns were made in the amount of $63.20 on Tuesday, June 7, and $60.08 on Wednesday, June 8.

12 XOOM CELL PHONES MISSING

A box of 12 Motorola Xoom cell phones was discovered missing when a shipment from Northbrook’s Fed Ex hub to Dallas, TX, was unloaded in April. Motorola shipped the phones to Northbrook, where they were unloaded, scanned and packed into box in a shipment headed for Dallas, according to police. When the shipping container was opened in Dallas, however, the phones were nowhere to be found.

PUBLIC WORKS EQUIPMENT STOLEN

An Echo backpack leaf blower worth $300, Stihl weed whip whacker worth $150 and Stihl hedge trimmer worth $400 were stolen from a Northbrook Public Works trucked parked at Landwehr Road and Cherry Lane Tuesday, June 7, according to police.

$500 MOUNTAIN BIKE STOLEN

A yellow Fuji “Absolute LX” mountain bike went missing Saturday, June 11, when a Northbrook Junior High School student left it unlocked on the bike rack at school, according to police. The loss was estimated at $549.97.

NEW SHOES STOLEN

A woman reported that her front passenger window was smashed and a pair of shoes she bought from DSW were stolen from her car while it was parked in Willow Festival during the evening of Monday, June 6.

MAILBOX DAMAGED

Someone hit a mailbox on Sunset Lane with a baseball bat or other similar instrument sometime between Saturday, June 4, and Sunday, June 5, according to police.
