Blotter: Minors Caught Drinking; Acid Bomb Thrown

The items below come from Northbrook Police Department reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Alfin J. Porter, 30, of Wheeling, was stopped for a traffic violation at Willow Road and Interstate 294, arrested and charged with improper lane usage and driving under the influence Sunday, May 29, according to police.

DRIVERS WITH SUSPENDED LICENSES

Mayer Zayan, 64, of Northbrook, was arrested at the scene of an accident at Sanders Road and Lindenwood Lane Thursday, May 26, and charged with failure to reduce speed and driving with a suspended license, according to police.

UNDERAGE DRINKING

Todd A. Walter, 18; James P. Malewicki, 19; and a 16-year-old boy; all of Northbrook, were issued citations consumption of alcohol by a minor after an officer allegedly saw the three drinking outside on Founders Drive Sunday, May 29, according to police.

OFFICE BURGLARIES ON SKOKIE BOULEVARD

A burglary was reported sometime between Friday, May 20, and Monday, May 23, in an office suite on the 300 block of Skokie Boulevard. Police found a broken window valued at $1,000 and a $1,500 laptop computer missing.

Another burglary was reported between Friday, May 20, and Monday, May 23, to a different office suite on Skokie Boulevard. Again, a window valued at $1,000 was broken and a laptop worth $2,500 was missing, according to police.

IDENTITY THEFT

A resident of Sanders Road informed police that someone had been using his social security number and reporting earnings to his Federally Insured Cash Account (FICA) during years that he did not report earnings, according to police.

A resident of Steven Lane reported on Monday, May 23, that she had received a bill in the mail from a retail store worth $2,748.48, according to police, although she said she had never opened an account with the store.

RETAIL THEFT AT BANANA REPUBLIC, VICTORIA’S SECRET AND BEST BUY

Two women came into Banana Republic Tuesday, May 23, and asked the manager on duty to check for an additional size. While the manager was looking in back, one of the women put two men’s button-down shirts worth $119 altogether into a large, black purse. Later the other woman attempted to return the items without a receipt, according to police.

An employee of Victoria’s Secret reported that three women took bras from the store Wednesday, May 25, without paying for them, according to police.

A 17-year-old Glenview boy was allegedly seen using a screwdriver to take two video game DVDs from their packaging at the Best Buy on Willow Road Saturday, May 28, according to police. He was issued local ordinance tickets for criminal damage to property and retail theft.

CAB RIDERS DON’T PAY

A cab driver reported that as he was dropping off a customer in Northbrook Sunday, May 29, who he had picked up in Evanston, the man ran away without paying at Angle and Lincoln avenues.

STOLEN WALLET USED TO BUY SHADES

A man reported that he lost his black leather Fossil wallet, worth $80, while he was at Northbrook Court Wednesday, May 25. When he checked his Bank of America debit card account the next day, he discovered that someone had used his card to buy something at the Cool Shades kiosk in the mall, according to police. When he called Cool Shades, an employee told him that a man about 25 to 30 years old bought a pair of sunglasses worth approximately $55 the same day the man lost his wallet.

FRAUDULENT PRESCRIPTION

Mary E. Frawley, 52, of Chicago, was charged with forgery and unlawful possession of a prescription form after she allegedly presented a fake prescription at the CVS on Willow Road, May 1, according to police. She was arrested at her home and charged with forgery and unlawful possession of a prescription.

FRAUD AT NEIMAN MARCUS

A man opened a Neiman Marcus charge account under someone else’s name at the Michigan Avenue location, then used a temporary paper voucher to buy a pair of shoes worth $775 at the Northbrook Court store Saturday, May 28, according to police.

‘MACGYVER BOMB’ THROWN

A resident of Gayle Court reported that someone rang his doorbell at about 9:34 p.m. Friday, May 27, then left very quickly. As he was walking to his front door, he heard an explosion. When he opened the door, no one was around but he did see a plastic water bottle filled with a yellow chemical and small pieces of aluminum foil sitting on the front step. Over the past few weeks, he told police, he had had several instances where teens rang his doorbell, then ran away. Police determined the bottle was like a “MacGyver” bomb, or homemade acid bomb.
