Driver Charged With Aggravated DUI After Fatal Crash

A Buffalo Grove man was charged after a car crash that took place early Thursday morning at Commercial Avenue and Sanders Road in Northbrook.

A 22-year-old Buffalo Grove man was charged with driving under the influence in connection with a car crash in Northbrook Thursday that left one 58-year-old woman dead at the scene.

Jiho Lee was charged with two counts of aggravated driving under the influence with great bodily harm, one count of aggravated driving under the influence causing a fatality, speeding and operating an uninsured motor vehicle, according to a press release from Northbrook police.

Lee was driving northbound on Sanders Road with two male passengers around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, when he crashed into a car driven by Zofia E. Strzalkowska, age 58, of Mount Prospect. Strzalkowska, who worked in Northbrook, was making a left turn onto Sanders Road from westbound Commercial Avenue.

Police and fire were called to the scene at 1:35 a.m. and worked until 2:10 a.m. before they finished extricating all four people from the two vehicles, according to officials.

Strzalkowska was fatally injured and died at the scene of the accident.

One of Lee’s passengers was transported to Lutheran General Hospital, where he remains hospitalized. A second passenger declined medical treatment at the scene.

Lee appeared at Cook County Circuit Court in Skokie Friday for a bond hearing. His bond was set at $1 million cash, with the provision that if he meets bond, he will be submitted to electronic home monitoring.

The accident is still under investigation, according to Northbrook Police. Officers are working with the Major Crash Assistance Team and the Cook County State’s Attorney.
